Which Water Problem Are You Solving?
Every water complaint traces to a specific issue, and the fix depends on what that issue is, not on which system a salesperson wants to move.
- Hard water and scale. Chalky spots on glassware, crusty buildup on faucets and showerheads, soap that won't lather, and a water heater that gets less efficient every year. This is calcium and magnesium, and it needs a softener.
- Chlorine taste or smell. The pool-water taste common on municipal supply. A carbon filter, whole-house or under-sink, handles it.

- General health reassurance. Concern about lead, cysts, or chemical contaminants for drinking and cooking water, usually best answered by a certified under-sink RO at the tap.

What Filtration Fixes, and What It Doesn't
A filter is not a universal fix, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with the wrong system. A water softener removes hardness but does nothing for taste or for iron staining. A carbon filter improves taste and removes chlorine but will not soften water or stop scale. Reverse osmosis is point-of-use, meant for a drinking tap, not for treating every gallon in the house.
There is also a case where no filter is the right answer. If your water tastes metallic and carries sediment because the home still has original galvanized supply lines, and many older northern-NJ homes do, a filter treats the symptom while the pipes keep shedding rust. The real fix there is whole-house repiping, replacing the galvanized with copper or PEX. We would rather tell you that than sell you a filter that masks the problem for a year. Honesty about the limits is part of the job.
